Experience:
What experience do you want to reflect on?
This experiment took place today when I tried to complete a full IELTS reading simulation from start to finish. Honestly, I’d been both dreading and curious about how it would feel to tackle everything together, after spending so much time working on one question type at a time.
Is this Kolb's cycle reflecting on an experiment from a previous Kolb's?
NO
What would a marginal gain look like?
- Comparison:
- The last MG was all about doing focused study to really nail the T/F/NG question type, with the idea that I’d only move on to other question types once I had that completely under control.
- But now I’m starting to think it makes more sense to mix all question types in together and practice them side by side, because skills from one often help with the others, and breaking them up too much might actually drag out my progress.
Reflection:
List and describe the sequence of events in chronological order
- Here’s how I planned my session for the day:
Session 1 – Full Reading Test Simulation (Total: 2 hr 15 min)
• Full IELTS Reading Test (Passages 1–3, with all mixed question types) – 60 min
• Going through and reviewing my wrong answers + tracking down exactly where in the passage the answers were – 20-30 min
• Logging all my mistake patterns and “trigger words” into my mistake tracker – 10-15 min
• Finally, doing this Kolb reflection to pick apart what went wrong, what went right, and what to change – 45-60 min
- I actually finished the test on time, but I was so tense. The time pressure was eating me alive because I’ve been so used to doing calm, isolated practice on just one type, like T/F/NG, without having to jump around.
- Once I wrapped up the test, I dove into reviewing my answers. I felt this little knot in my stomach every time I spotted something I got wrong. Still, I carefully logged each mistake into my tracker, along with the words or ideas that threw me off, so I could see my weak spots clearly.
